Perhaps because of the history upon which it is based, the book's plot is threadbare. The child gets involved in a bloody battle with a criminal named Toadvine, but they ultimately collaborate to lantern a resort. What a bitter disappointment First of all, let me say that I am an unabashed admirer of everything else I've read or listed to by Cormac McCarthy. Literature classes all over the country have puzzled over the Judge and his role. The definitive portrait of the American West.

Even the language seems intended to confound and discomfit the reader, mixing arcane, half-forgotten scientific and philosophical terms with passages that sound almost like something from the Bible. The book's closing chapters focus heavily on the Judge, and are arguably the best portion of the entire novel. The narrator is actually quite good, but the problem with Blood Meridian as an audiobook is actually due to the very qualities that make vlood books so great.
Approach at your own risk! Blood Meridian begins with the introduction of the youngster, a year old boy from Tennessee who was born throughout a meteor shower and has a fierce streak. Both brother and sister wander separately through a countryside being scourged by three terrifying and elusive strangers, headlong toward an eerie, apocalyptic resolution.
Richard Poe, who performs the novel, is so amazing that I would listen to a book performed by him even if I had little interest in the book.

There are no good men in Blood Meridian, only oppressive, repeated, unspeakable evil. Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant.
Overall, though, I struggled to enjoy the book. David Foster Wallace Narrated by: Make no mistake, Blood Meridian is filled with powerful questions, about morality, about evil, about humanity's need for violence and dominance, about the nature of God, and so forth.
Judge Holden makes a routine of providing unplanned lessons on geology, nature, and approach to any person who will pay attention, as well as he frequently walks in the nude. A spare but spectacularly vivid novel- most discuss the brutal violence, but the landscape descriptions are amazing and what I find most compelling about the work.
Long, brutal, and mostly aimless I decided to read this book after finishing Cormac McCarthy's The Road, which was perhaps the most profound cormqc I have read for years. The casual descriptions of brutality are at times shocking and that, I think, is the point. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France inbut quickly became a success with the public in Europe, and later in America. While lots of things happen and I understand meridizn McCarthy's focus is on spiritual rather than literal character development the book seemed to lack a clear plot or any character development.

There is no readily discernible arc or story or conflict. Afterwards, Glanton discusses that he assumed that Gomez, the man whose scalp brings the greatest reward, had been staying in this camp, however he was mistaken.
BLOOD MERIDIAN
McCarthy seems to bask in the blood and cruelty, lingering for far too long on scenes aduiobook terrible evil without ever offering a balance. A flawless masterpiece on paper and, equally remarkably, in this recorded format.
Preternaturally intelligent and entirely amoral, he is perhaps the most enigmatic character I've ever encountered. No discussion of great modern authors is complete without mention of Cormac McCarthy, whose rare and blazing talent makes his every work a true literary event.

I kept wondering why I was continuing to listen to this when nothing seemed to be happening, even when terrible things were happening every minute.
What members say Average Customer Ratings Overall. Maddox Marietta, OH Literature benefits when each event creates some change in plot or character. I bought it for the same reason I bought neverwhere; Because it is "one of the greatest ever written", but it just didn't grab me.
The mmeridian repetitive brutal episodes in this book do not cause change. This is hard to do when listening to a book, and at times I feel frustrated and pulled along faster than I want to be, and losing the narrative line, and subsequently my connection to the story.

Though we don't live in such lawless times anymore, the distance from our safe doorsteps to the mccarghy equivalent of a gang of roving, murderous scalpers may be shorter than we think. There is a mystical epilogue concerning an unnamed guy digging holes in the desert and lighting fires in them, all as wanderers follow him closely. The Exorcist 40th Anniversary Edition Written mcvarthy More from the same Author: He is an almost singular literary beacon in these times.
I admire his quality of prose, discriptive abilities, use of word and language structure to convey meaning beyond the words.
